Fields of Gold invites you to see summer in full bloom in South Stormont

There comes a point every summer when the landscape changes.

Fields that were green only weeks before suddenly burst into brilliant shades of yellow, turning quiet country roads into destinations all their own. At Fields of Gold in South Stormont, about 25 acres of sunflowers bloom across three fields, creating a colourful backdrop for a summer day on the farm.

Located about an hour from Ottawa, roughly 90 minutes from Montreal and four hours from Toronto, Fields of Gold makes an easy day trip where you can wander sunflower fields, pick fresh blooms and discover something new with every visit.

But the sunflowers are only the beginning.

The farm that is now Fields of Gold was purchased from Jakob’s parents in 2018. The property has been transformed from his parents in 2018The property has beeninto a seasonal destination where sunflowers, cut flowers and family-friendly experiences draw people from across the region.

“We have about 25 acres of sunflowers that we're growing,” Jakob said. “There would be three separate fields, plus a corn maze, a pumpkin patch, and a couple other things that we're currently building and putting up.”

That continual growth reflects his vision for the farm. Every season brings something new, giving first-timers plenty to see while offering returning guests another reason to come back.

As you stroll through the fields, you'll find lots of opportunities to stop for photographs, admire the scenery or wander the pathways through the blooms. 

If you’d rather take some of that colour home, the farm’s U-pick flower patch lets you gather your own bouquet from a mix of dahlias, zinnias, sunflowers and other seasonal blooms. You can also stop by Rosie, the farm’s vintage flower truck, for a ready-made bouquet before heading home.

Fresh flowers have become an important part of the farm’s growing business. Jakob said about half to three-quarters of an acre is dedicated to cut flowers sold throughout the season, including at the Cornwall Farmers’ Market.

After one recent market, he couldn't hide his excitement.

“We brought more flowers than we’ve ever brought to a market,” he said. “It went really, really well.”

While photography has always been a major draw, Jakob admits another group caught him completely off guard.

“The one group that has very much surprised me that I never, to be honest with you, never thought of ... birdwatchers.”

People travel from Ottawa, Kingston and Montreal carrying lawn chairs, binoculars and cameras, then settle in for hours watching birds move through the fields. Early in the season they hunt insects among the towering blooms. Later, after the flowers have faded, birds return to feast on sunflower seeds.

For Jakob, it was an unexpected reminder that the farm offers different experiences to different people.

The first time he spotted someone setting up a tripod, he assumed they were preparing for a photo shoot. Instead, the guest explained they were there to watch birds.

It's become one of Jakob’s favourite stories to tell.

Throughout the season, Fields of Gold hosts special events that celebrate the changing landscape, so every trip offers something a little different.
