If you’re looking for a good old-fashioned diner breakfast or lunch, Mama Sue’s Diner is your spot. Located on 850 Boundary Road and open 7am -1pm Wednesday – Sundays, your mouth will water with the Biscuit Platter or Mixed Berry Crepes for breakie, or a Philly Steak sub or Roast Beef melt for lunch. If you’re brave enough, they even have Liver & Onions.
Next Up
Visit the Dam Visitors Centre, Saunders Dam that is. Located just 12 km away on the banks of the St. Lawrence River, Ontario Power Generation’s visitor centre showcases the history of the St. Lawrence Seaway and Power Project as well as the Mohawks of Akwesasne and the communities and people affected. Explore the informative interactive displays and learn about the former communities, The Lost Villages, affected by the rivers inundation. Bonus – sit in on A Conversation with the Lost Villages Divers from 1-4pm on Sept. 10th.
Once your Dam (LOL) visit is complete, time to head outdoors to Avonmore Berry Farm at 16365 Fourth Road in Avonmore. This is the quintessential farm visit if you’re looking for fall produce, jams, fresh baking, slides, swings, sandboxes and wagon rides, and of course apples and pumpkins. Get outside, breath in that wonderful fresh air and run your keester off!
The Journey Continues
Fall brings earlier sunsets and more time to explore fascinating lighting displays. A quick 25-minute drive will bring you to our next stop, the award-winning Pumpkinferno at Upper Canada Village. Take a tour through this spectacular outdoor art exhibit of over 7,000 handcrafted pumpkins all lit at night along a kilometer-long path in a picturesque 19th-century backdrop. Open select evenings from late September through October, you won’t want to miss this chance to walk in a world of pumpkins. You can even spend the night in one of Upper Canada Villages’ rental accommodations like the cozy log Montgomery House or the charming two-story Guest House farmhouse.
We’re staying out in the countryside again today. Grab a quick breakfast and hit the road for another day of firsts by heading to Vanderlaand, The Barnyard Zoo located at 11827 County Rd. 5 in Winchester Springs is open Wednesday to Sunday from 10am-3pm. The Zoo has animals of all kinds who can’t wait to meet you, including: Miniature horses, goats, sheep, alpacas, donkeys, rabbits, guinea pigs, pot belly pigs (too cute!), chickens, peacocks, emus, and geese.
The Heart of the Willow Alpaca Farm at 10304 Sandy Creek Rd. in Brinston is where you’ll find every colour of alpaca you can imagine. The farm will open its doors to visitors this fall. Come and see these oh-so-interesting animals.
