Imagine going behind closed doors and getting a tour of a site in a South Eastern Ontario community not normally open or seen - for free! That’s a reality at Doors Open Ontario events being staged this summer across the region.
Cornwall and SDG Counties, Rideau Lakes and Belleville are hosting events showcasing incredible heritage, stunning nature and intriguing culture.
A collaboration between communities and Doors Open Ontario through the Ontario Heritage Trust, Doors Open is the key that unlocks hundreds of fascinating historical sites. The events enable visitors to gain rare, free access to buildings and spaces that are normally closed to the public or sites that would typically charge admission.
The Doors Open program was launched in Ontario in 2002, and since then more than 9 million visits have been made to heritage sites participating in this exciting initiative. Doors Open Ontario, considered a cultural phenomenon, will continue in 2025 with communities participating across the province.
In fact, August 16 and 17, 2025 is a big weekend in the region as both Rideau Lakes and Cornwall and SDG Counties are hosting their Doors Open events on the same weekend. Belleville’s event is set for September 3 as a wonderful bridge into the changing seasons.
Whether you’re curious about a heritage structure that caught your eye, you’re looking for a perfect photo moment inside a historical space, or even if you’re a history buff eager to learn more about intriguing heritage sites, Doors Open Ontario provides you with access to places and the freedom to explore that you can't get any other way.
Discover hidden histories and untold stories during Doors Open Rideau Lakes! It’s the first time in almost a decade that the township has hosted a Doors Open event and it’s gearing up to be fantastic, with almost 20 sites ready to welcome and inspire visitors on August 16 and 17.
In Rideau Lakes, visitors can glimpse inside a rare rural mausoleum, view the Rideau from high atop a granite cliff, see a colour-changing stained glass window or stroll on a field walk guided by scientists. Walk gracefully up a sweeping wooden staircase in a grand 1800s manor or be intrigued by a 160-year-old full body baptismal font in a church turned private residence! Walk inside a centuries old military Blockhouse - open for the first time in 25 years - or take a trip along the Rideau Canal through historic photos. Watch wide eyed as 200-year-old millstones grind wheat into flour and blacksmiths demo their craft. Unique experiences await at Doors Open Rideau Lakes!
