Discover the Story of the Lost Villages
To better understand the history behind the Saunders Hydro Dam and the transformation of the St. Lawrence River, consider a visit to the Lost Villages Museum in nearby Long Sault. The museum tells the story of the communities that were permanently flooded during the construction of the St. Lawrence Seaway and Power Project in the 1950s. Through historic buildings, exhibits and artifacts, visitors can explore one of the most significant engineering and community stories in Ontario's history and gain a deeper appreciation for the region surrounding the Saunders Hydro Dam.

Continue west to the Long Sault Parkway, which offers a scenic drive connecting a series of islands with beaches, picnic areas and stunning river views. Created as part of the St. Lawrence Seaway and Power Project in the 1950s, these islands emerged after the river was flooded, reshaping the region and leading to the creation of the Lost Villages. Today, the parkway is one of Eastern Ontario's most popular destinations for outdoor recreation, offering opportunities for cycling, swimming, birdwatching and waterfront relaxation.
